Green Poison Cake

What better to serve up to a house full of witches and spooky skeletons than a slice of green poison cake?

Fun and tasty chocolate iced cake, coloured green with food colouring (you are welcome to colour it whichever colour you like) but we like green, as green is perfect for Halloween!

Ice the cake with cocoa powder icing (icing sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder). If you want to add a little extra, you can sprinkle some fun Halloween sprinkles on top.

Preheat oven to 175 C.

Prepare a square baking tin.


  • 250 grams sugar
  • 200 grams soft unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 200 grams plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • approx 200 ml milk (room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons almond extract (Vanilla can be used instead)
  • Green food colouring (quiet a lot 2-3 tsp)

For the icing:

  • 200 grams Icing sugar
  • Approx 2-3 unsweetened cocoa powder

Mix icing and sugar cocoa powder and whisk it well together. Then add 3-4 tablespoons of cold water (you may need a little more).

Green Poison Cake


  1. In a bowl sift together the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well in between. Scrape down the sides when needed.
  4. Next add the flour mix into the egg, sugar and butter mixture , then add the milk and stir gently.
  5. Stir in the almond flavour. Then add drops of green food colouring. Please note that the cake will get a little darker while baking.
  6. Pour the green cake batter into the cake pan and smooth with a rubber spatula. To avoid the cake from getting too brown, place the cake on the lowest rack in the oven. Bake the cake for about 30 minutes. The cake is ready when a cake tester comes out clean.
  7. Transfer the cake to a cooling rack and let it cool completely before you spread on the cocoa powder icing. Cut the cake into squares and enjoy.
