Delightful Doilies

What used to be "a symbol of suburban gentility" in the 1950’s but since then has had little usage other than in catering, has been given a new lease of life with new colours, patterns and shapes being available and has once again seen a huge surge in popularity and is now used, as an all time favourite for parties, event and crafting.

Not surprising given it’s multitude of uses. It’s an inexpensive way of adding colour, fun and style to a table setting and works it’s magic in so many ways for a party. To add to this, it is fantastically easy to transform into pretty bunting, garland and sweet little party and drinks parasols...

Doily Bunting

Doily Bunting:

You will need: (to make a 2.5 mtr length with 10-12 pennants)

  • 30 Round doilies, many colours and sizes (a mixed pack is perfect for this)
  • String or ribbon, approx 2.5-3 mtrs
  • Glue

Instructions:

  • Fold all doilies in half.
  • Combine together in 2 or 3 to create an overlay in size showing the doily underneath.
  • Once combinations have been created to make a total of 10-12 semicircle doilies (once doily is folded in half) stick the combo’s together with glue, so they are easily attached to bunting ribbon/string without coming apart.
  • Once dry, fold the doily semi circles over the string in the desired order on the bunting and stick both sides of semicircles together, taking care not to stick it to the actual ribbon (this is to make it possible to slide the doilies ‘pennants’ into position where they are wanted on the ribbon once you hang it.
  • Hang, position doily ‘pennants’ and admire.
  • This should take you no longer than 30-45 min to make depending on your finished length.

This garland is made up of doilies sewn directly onto the string to create a garland full of circular shapes. This works best if done in white as both colours of doilies looks equally nice from both side and when the garland spin it make no difference. However using colour or gold/silver doilies also makes a great garland particularly hang against a wall etc where the ‘spinning around’ of the circles are unlikely to be very visible. You could always double up with 2 doilies back to back to avoid this problem.

Doily Garland

Doily Garland:

You will need:

  • Small doilies (10-12cm diameter) – approx 20
  • String or twine – approx 3-4 mtrs
  • A sewing machine

Instructions:

  • Start by sewing straight down the line of the string or twine with a slight zigzag stitch.
  • Lay a doily with the string running straight through the centre of the doily and continue to stitch across the string and doily making them stitched together.
  • Space the next doily approx 10-15cm down and continue like this until all the doilies are attached…And done!
  • This should take you a maximum of 15min...I did say it was quick and easy!
